Sustainable Network Building '24

Blake is a funny guyProfessional development is more important than ever, especially to those AATG members who need it the most. AATG is proud to be able to offer a leadership training program that culminates in a trip to the AATG/ACTFL Convention in Philadelphia November 22-24.

After 2 years, the AATG is looking again at building a network of future leaders through a formal program, focused on sustainability and intentional support of German programs.

This project will provide a network of 20 trained teachers, provide online training opportunities, and culminate in an in-person networking/professional development seminar at the ACTFL convention.

This project will give a strong preference to disadvantaged groups, or teachers teaching at institutions with a high proportion of students who are from disadvantaged groups. This includes students/teachers of color, first generation students, and seriously economically challenged institutions.  This grant also is designed for first-time attendees of ACTFL to help kick-start active engagement for those who have not yet had a chance to attend.

This program provides financial assistance to support leadership training seminars prior to the ACTFL Convention.
Convention support is valued at $1900 per participant. This includes a transportation stipend, hotel, registration, programming costs in Philadelphia and a per-diem for incidental expenses. Applicants can expect to pay $300 total for all costs, including a $100 deposit if accepted. This grant is meant to support members who might lack robust institutional support. Members who are eligible to apply:
  • senior undergraduates in a teacher training program for German
  • student teachers
  • graduate students
  • teachers of German with less than 7 years of full-time teaching experience
  • Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color who teach German
  • teachers of German at Minority Serving Institutions (25% of students are federally recognized as minorities)
  • teachers at institutions that serve low-income students such as Title I institutions

Members who have previously received a "Building Professional Connections" or "Next Gen" grant from the AATG are not eligible to apply given the overlap in these programs.

Recipients must actively take part in all pre-conference programming, and must complete an evaluation survey.
