Board Treasurer — Role Overview & Call for Candidates

Board Treasurer — Role Overview & Call for Candidates

Term of service: January 1, 2027 – December 31, 2029, with the possibility of one three-year renewal.
Volunteer / unpaid officer position.

The Opportunity

The AATG Board of Directors is seeking its next Treasurer. The Treasurer is an appointed officer of the Association who serves on both the Board of Directors and the Board Steering Committee and chairs the Finance Committee.

What the Treasurer Does Not Do

This is an oversight and leadership role, not a bookkeeping role. Day-to-day financial administration — billing, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, tax preparation, and active investment management — is handled by AATG's professional staff, an independent audit firm, and professional investment advisors. You do not need to be an accountant to do this job well.

Key Duties

  • Serve as a voting member of the Board of Directors and the Board Steering Committee.

  • Chair the Finance Committee, including setting its annual meeting calendar.

  • Review standard financial statements each quarter and report on AATG's financial health to the Board.

  • Work with the Executive Director to build and propose the annual budget (Aug–Dec cycle).

  • Review the annual Form 990 tax return and present a plain-language summary to the Board.

  • Report annually to the AATG membership on the organization's financial state.

  • Act as the Board's liaison on finance, investment, and audit matters.

What We're Looking For

No candidate is expected to bring all of the following. Most AATG Treasurers have come from the teaching and academic ranks, not the finance industry — the systems above exist, so the role is learnable.

  • Current AATG membership in good standing.

  • Comfort reading a financial statement, or willingness to learn — the Finance Committee, ED will walk you through it.

  • Budgeting, fiduciary, or financial-oversight experience, especially in a nonprofit, school, or academic department, is a plus but not required.

Willingness to ask plain questions and explain financial matters clearly to colleagues whose expertise is teaching German, not finance.

Time Commitment

  • 5 Board meetings/year — 4 virtual, 1 in person at the AATG annual meeting (travel and lodging reimbursed per AATG policy).

  • 4 quarterly financial reports/year (Feb, May, Aug, Nov).

  • Finance Committee meetings, scheduled by the Treasurer — heavier in Sep–Dec during the budget cycle.

  • Estimated 5–10 hours/month on average; heavier around audit season and budget approval (Sep–Dec).

Transition & Support

The incoming Treasurer onboards alongside the outgoing Treasurer and the Executive Director, and works throughout the term with AATG's professional staff, audit firm, and the investment advisor.

How to Apply

  • Letter of interest: describe relevant financial or administrative experience, especially in nonprofit or educational settings, and why you want to serve AATG in this role.

  • Current CV or resume.

Submit both via email to AATG President Jennifer Redmann (jennifer.redmann@fandm.edu)

Applications are due October 11, 2026.
