Welcome to the German Teaching Training Pipeline (GTTP) 2026

What is the GTTP 2026?

Hosted by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), the German Teaching Training Pipeline (GTTP) 2026 Pilot is a new initiative designed to combat the severe, nationwide shortage of German teachers at K-12 schools across the United States. Currently, unfilled teaching positions force many schools to reduce or completely cancel their German language programs. Rather than relying on short-term fixes, the GTTP aims to create a structural bridge between students at schools and universities and the teaching job market. By connecting aspiring educators with experienced professionals, we are building a robust network to support the next generation of German learners and teachers.

Who We Are Looking For

We are actively recruiting participants across multiple levels of experience to build our intergenerational network:

  • Future Educators: We are looking for K-12 German learners and university students (at the undergraduate or master's level) who are interested in pursuing a rewarding career in teaching.
  • Experienced Mentors: We invite current K-12 German teachers who are approaching retirement to join us and pass on their valuable knowledge and experience to the next generation.
  • Commitment to Equity: A central goal of the GTTP is the promotion of educational equity. During our selection process, preference is given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including first-generation students, individuals from low-income households, and members of underrepresented groups.

How to Apply and Get Involved

The GTTP pilot project runs from May through December 2026 and offers several distinct ways to participate:

  • Share Your Voice in Our Survey: In May 2026, we will launch a nationwide survey to better understand the attractiveness of the teaching profession and identify potential hurdles. We need at least 200 German learners to participate to help shape our engagement strategies.
  • Join the Mentoring Program: We are establishing a mentoring network connecting retiring teachers with aspiring German educators. Mentor recruitment and training will take place during the summer, with the official program kicking off in August. We aim to support 10 to 15 active mentor-mentee pairs over a 6-month period.
  • Apply for a GTTP Scholarship: To provide a concrete incentive to enter the teaching profession, the GTTP will fund scholarships for teacher training. Applications for the scholarship program will be announced in August, with awards distributed in September 2026.
  • Attend a Regional Meeting: Between September and November 2026, we will host three regional networking events to facilitate mentor-mentee matching and provide training. Locations will be carefully selected based on regional expertise, accessible logistics, and appropriate infrastructure.

Our Partners and Long-Term Vision

The GTTP is administered by the AATG in collaboration with the SPARK Network, the DAAD, university departments, and local AATG chapters.  Our goal is lasting sustainability. In December 2026, the project will culminate in the public release of the "GTTP German Teachers Toolkit." This documented, user-friendly guide will empower university German departments to independently run their own cost-effective recruitment and mentoring programs well beyond 2026.
