Event Details
The AATG DEI Committee invites you to join an upcoming workshop with Carol Jenkins and Katherine Kerschen:
Breaking Out of the Culture Box: An Exploration of Critical Approaches to Language Teaching for the Unsure and Hesitant
🗓️ Thursday, October 1, 2026 | 7pm ET, 6pm CT, 5pm MT, 4pm PT | Zoom
Have you ever been dissatisfied with the representations of culture provided in your textbook? Have you wondered how to apply concepts like “de-centering” and “inclusivity” to your own teaching? So have we! We wanted to challenge monolithic portrayals of culture but weren’t sure how to proceed, which ultimately led us to create a guidebook that provides a starting point to explore critical pedagogies and integrate them into your present content. We published the guidebook as an OER under a Creative Commons license so that it is freely available to be used, shared, adapted, and re-mixed. In this workshop we will show how to access and navigate the guidebook, walk through examples of changes we’ve made to our pedagogy, and give attendees the opportunity to come up with easily implementable modifications to their own materials. Both the guidebook and the workshop focus on practical suggestions that are applicable to all levels of instruction, K-12 as well as college level, and various institutional and political contexts.
Dr. Carol Jenkins and Dr. Katherine Kerschen are Lecturers of German at Washington University in St. Louis.
