Patricia Calkins


Patricia Calkins is Professor of German at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she teaches all levels of the curriculum in a program centered on helping students acquire intercultural skills. Patricia has led semester-long study abroad courses 8 times. She is also an active member of the Goethe Institut's Trainenetzwerk. Patricia has been an active AATG member since 1981.

The Culture-Driven Language Classroom: Getting Started
This workshop examines the reasons for placing culture and intercultural skills at the basis of everything we do in the language classroom. Participants will also participate in practical activities that help guide them in developing modules that will lead them to fully implementing this exciting pedagogy. The Culture-Driven Curriculum
The workshop is intended for those who have already begun making the transition to the culture-driven language classroom who are now interested in infusing their curriculum with culture-rich content leading to the acquisition of intercultural skills. Keywords: History and Culture

Intercultural Learning: Getting the Most out of Study Abroad
Students get more intercultural learning out of short-term or long-term study abroad if they have been carefully prepared for the intercultural experience. This workshop focuses on pre-departure, in-country, and post-return activities that help students make the most of their study abroad experience. Keywords: Study Abroad/Exchange Programs
