Why did you first start learning German?
I've always had interest in Germany and the German language. When I learned that German was offered in my high school, I did not hesitate to start formally learning the language. Even after a rough start, I will never regret learning it.

What did you get out of your German studies?
I was accepted to two exchange programs to Germany and learned more about myself and life. Learning German also opened the door to my learning of other languages including Dutch, Russian, and French which has helped me even more!

What influence did German have on your career choices?
Working in the maritime industry constantly involves dealing with German companies. Specifically for choosing my line of work, knowing German was only a perk, but for succeeding in the maritime industry, German was instrumental!

How do you use German today at home or in your work?
With all of my time speaking German, the language is part of my life. In my current job, I've used German semi-regularly, perhaps once or twice a month. In my previous job, it was weekly boarding ships with German crews or corresponding with contacts in Germany. I speak German daily in some regard, be it speaking with friends online, reading "Der Spiegel" or "Deutsche Welle" or sometimes merely because I can. I often find myself counting in German, for example.
