Why did you first start learning German?
My Oma came to Michigan from Bamberg after the Second World War. Her story, combined with her famous Sonntagsessen, German holiday traditions, all pushed me to want to learn German. I'm also convinced that being able to communicate with her in her native language added another dimension to our relationship. Our travels back to Upper Franconia remain some of my most vivid memories.

What did you get out of your German studies?
I gained empathy and the ability to confirm or challenge my own beliefs, as well as the "spark" to share with students.

What influence did German have on your career choices?
I can't imagine a life or career without German. It has always been - and will continue to be - an integral part of who I am, what I represent, and what I want to share with my family, friends, and students.

How do you use German today at home or in your work?
Not only do I get to share my joy and passion of the German language and culture with my students, I have also happily given our daughter Hildegard a chance at learning German from the start. She may answer mostly 'auf Denglisch', but her ability to negotiate meaning when I speak to her in German is one of the most rewarding aspects of parenting.
