Study Trip Award Selection Process

Students who score at or above the 90th percentile on the Level 2, 3, or 4 National German Exam and meet other eligibility requirements may apply for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Award, a 3-4 week trip to Germany in the summer following the Exam. The process to select the recipients of the Study Trip Award begins at the local level through AATG chapters and culminates with final selection by a national committee.

Chapter Testing Chairs. AATG chapter presidents appoint one AATG chapter member to be the Chapter Testing Chair every year. The Chapter Testing Chair leads a committee to select the chapter travel award nominees and distributes National German Exam awards. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, Chapter Testing Chairs are often selected from college or university level members.

Chapter Nominee Selection Process. Results for the National German Exam are sent to teachers and Chapter Testing Chairs after exam administration. Eligible students apply for the award online. Chapter Testing Chairs and their committees review these applications and interview students by phone or in person using the Student Interview Guidelines and Evaluation Form. Chapters then select one semifinalist nominee for each of the two Study Trip Awards, Award I and Award II. More information about the two awards is available here.

Final Selection of Award Recipients. Chapter Testing Chairs send the completed Student Interview Evaluation Form of each semifinalist nominee to AATG. Chapter Testing Chairs also inform all chapter candidates and teachers of their selection. The National Selection Committee makes the final selection of the Study Trip Award recipients from the pool of chapter nominees. AATG notifies chapter nominees, Chapter Testing Chairs, and Chapter Presidents of the final decisions no later than mid-April. Results are also published on the AATG website.

Honoring Student Award Recipients. In many chapters, Chapter Testing Chairs organize a National German Exam awards ceremony for students, parents, and administrators to distribute prizes. AATG also sends medals and book prizes to Chapter Testing Chairs for distribution to students. AATG also offers free downloadable certificates to honor students. Embossed seals for each level of performance are available for purchase from the AATG store. Chapters may also supply additional prizes.
