Special Cross-Over Issues:
German Fairy Tales and Folklore in a Global Context

The editorial teams of The German Quarterly and Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German are putting together a special cross-over issue on "German Fairy Tales and Folklore in a Global Context."

The editors are looking for articles by scholars working in German literature, culture, and/or pedagogy that advance new arguments about fairy tales or folklore, Volks- or Kunstmärchen, from the Middle Ages to the present, and approaches to incorporating these texts and topics in the classroom.

Inclusion in the volumes will depend on passing a double-blind peer review process, used by The German Quarterly and Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German for all published manuscripts. Anticipated publication date is May 2021.

The German Quarterly

The editorial team is looking for accessibly written essays by scholars working in German literature and culture that advance new arguments about fairy tales or folklore, Volks- or Kunstmärchen, from the Middle Ages to the present.

The editorial team wishes to re-read tales as aesthetic constructions and historical documents that also may be critical of German society and its norms and values. We expect contributions to move beyond existing theoretical models—including, but not limited to, Bruno Bettelheim’s seminal The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales (1975), with its theses about how tales mobilize psychic mechanisms of projection and identification. We want to explore the status and nature of tales in German cultural history as they connect with our global present: why does this seemingly arch-traditional form have the potential to be innovative, supple, and seemingly adaptable to every cultural space and time? What theoretical frameworks work best for re-interpreting tales? Essays that examine the Grimms’ tales are welcome, as are essays on texts by their Romantic contemporaries, by underrepresented authors in German society, on older tales, and on remakes. We are particularly interested in case studies that document the worldwide impact or relevance of German fairy tales. We in particular welcome contributions by scholars with experience teaching fairy tales.

Articles should be approximately 5,000 words, including notes and Works Cited. Author Guidelines can be found here. Submissions are welcome in English and German; submissions in German are encouraged. Potential contributors must be members of the AATG.

Timeline:

April 1, 2020: 250-word abstract and short CV due to all three editors (Laurie Johnson lruthjoh@illinois.edu; Angelika Kraemer akraemer@cornell.edu; and Carl Niekerk niekerk@illinois.edu).

April 27, 2020: Contributors notified

September 15, 2020:  5,000-word essay due

December 15, 2020: revised version due

May 2021: publication

Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German

For contributions to Die Unterrichtspraxis, the editorial team is particularly interested in manuscripts that showcase innovative approaches to teaching (with) fairy tales and folklore as well as units that incorporate less-commonly taught authors or stories. How can we teach with and about fairy tales and folklore both in their historical form and tradition but also in modern adaptations and varying media formats? How have you introduced German learners of different ages to the world of German fairy tales? What tools and methodological approaches have you incorporated to teach and assess students’ learning?

Original articles should not exceed 8,000 words in length including references and appendices. Manuscripts submitted under the category of Practical Tips can be shorter. Please review the Author Guidelines for details and a template. Die Unterrichtspraxis accepts essays in English or German. Potential contributors must be members of the AATG.
