Carmen Terry of the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas received the Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. This award recognizes achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the US.

Carmen Terry holds an M.A. from Texas Tech and has been a full-time German faculty member at the University of North Texas since 1998, and is now the Principal Lecturer of German. She is a regular presenter at language conferences and was part of the Goethe-Institut Trainernetzwerk.

The tremendous growth in numbers of students completing minors and majors in German at the University of North Texas in the last years testifies to Carmen Terry’s excellent work. For instance, in 2007 she single-handedly initiated, organized, and carried out a Faculty Study Abroad program first to Leipzig, then to other German sites.

Successful language programs will also benefit from continuous interdisciplinary exchange: Carmen Terry is well known to frequently discuss teaching ideas with her colleagues both seeking and providing advice as to how to make classes in the language section better. A colleague remarks, "Ms. Terry is the consummate teacher. She places her students and her classes above all else.”
