Angelika Kraemer of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan received the Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. This award recognizes achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the US.

Angelika Kraemer serves as the Director of the Community Language School, as Associate Director of the Center for Language Teaching Advancement, and as Instructor at the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University – to mention a few of her functions. She left Freiburg for Michigan in 2001 and completed her Ph.D. at Michigan State University in 2008. Currently, she serves as president of the AATG Michigan chapter.

Angelika offers regular workshops which address the practical needs of language professionals to keep pace with new ideas and techniques in the field, learn and practice new technologies, and interact with each other as members of a large community. She’s considered "one of those rare individuals who has the energy, personality, and dedication to be an effective teacher and mentor in the trenches as well as an inspiring colleague and leader in our professional circles.”

She organized the outreach program "German For Kids”, whose innovative curriculum, program planning, and modest fee structure made it a highly successful introduction for children in Detroit and the Lansing area to the world of German language and cultures. Angelika Kraemer’s efforts illustrate what can be accomplished in the area of teaching German to preschoolers and students in elementary school – perhaps one of the most promising approaches for the development of German in the US.
