Melanie Mello, of St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana, received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. The award is granted by the German Embassy to up-and-coming German teachers for excellence in teaching, creativity, outstanding dedication, and enthusiasm for the German language.

Melanie Mello is a dynamic language teacher who constantly seeks innovative methods for maximum student engagement and learning. Her success is evident in the revitalization of German at Saint Joseph’s High School, where the number of students enrolled in German I doubled in the last five years since she began teaching.

She works closely with departmental colleagues to develop student-based outcomes, and employs a broad variety of techniques to ensure student success, including having students write and film a detective mystery. Music, podcasts, cartoons, and television provide authentic input.

Melanie Mello engages students by making German relevant to their personal interests and to the broader world. Students participate in "Das Bild der Anderen,” a Goethe-Institut project. Her classes connect with other students of German through emails, sharing personal experiences along with cultural aspects of their respective countries. One student remarks, "Frau Mello’s class — a highlight of my day!” Colleagues and students alike find inspiration in Melanie Mello.
