Amy Flynn of Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, Colorado, received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. The award is granted by the German Embassy to up-and-coming German teachers for excellence in teaching, creativity, outstanding dedication, and enthusiasm for the German language.

Amy Flynn has taught German for 8 years at Bear Creek High School in Jefferson County Public Schools, and shows enthusiasm for improving instruction, motivating students, and developing a strong and growing German program.

Ms. Flynn maintains a student-centered learning environment. Students learn German in context and through concepts, through activities to strengthen communication in German. Her proficiency-based assessments include choice, independent work, and self-expression, and encourage her students to communicate in a natural, accurate manner. A GAPP exchange every two years motivates students, and strengthens support for German among families and the community.

Amy Flynn participates in professional development on topics such as concept-based instruction and performance-based assessments, and shares what she’s learned with her peers in monthly meetings. A colleague writes: "It’s been a privilege to observe first hand Ms. Flynn’s zeal for teaching the German language and the excitement that her excellent methods generate among her students.”
