Rustin Buck, of Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. The award is granted by the German Embassy to up-and-coming German teachers for excellence in teaching, creativity, outstanding dedication, and enthusiasm for the German language.

Rustin Buck excels in helping students make connections with the world through the German language and culture. He and his students use German almost exclusively in the classroom. Rustin Buck employs a range of different activities and resources – online newscasts, plays, posters, videos, phone messages – to sharpen students’ skills.

Students and their families gain valuable intercultural experience though the GAPP exchange and a sister city exchange with Leipzig. Rustin Buck organizes Houstonfest, a regional German student competition, which promotes German throughout the area. He regularly collaborates with other teachers, and is an active member of the Houston AATG chapter.

A parent writes, "We are greatly indebted to Mr. Buck for his ability to use a variety of methods and techniques to teach German, but more so for his never-ending passion to infuse his students with valuable life lessons in pursuit of that knowledge.” A colleague says with admiration, "Rustin Buck is the epicenter of all things German in the Houston area.”
