Nikolaus Euba received AATG’s highest honor, the 2013 Outstanding German Educator Award, at the recent conference in Orlando. This award is presented in recognition of excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the German teaching profession.

Nikolaus Euba, Language Program Coordinator and Lecturer in German at the University of California, Berkeley since 2003, instructs language and foreign language methodology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. He directs Berkeley’s German Language Program with ten different multi-section courses at five levels. He is responsible for curriculum development and implementation, placement testing, advising, and training and supervision of graduate student instructors.

Mr. Euba is co-author of the intermediate textbook Stationen, now in its second edition and characterized as "elegant and attractive” by Professor Claire Kramsch. He is a certified ACTFL oral proficiency tester and director of national DAAD-sponsored methodology workshops for teaching assistants and junior faculty.

Colleagues at Berkeley, within the AATG, graduate and undergraduate students alike, all attest to Niko Euba’s dedicated distinction. Graduate students in his pedagogy seminars praise his effectiveness; his pedagogical skills; the organization of his courses; the breadth of his knowledge; the intimate connection between theory and practice; and his helpfulness inside and outside the classroom. Undergraduate students praise his holistic approach; his organization; his helpfulness; his efficiency as a language teacher; his willingness to explain things thoroughly; and his ability to create a perfect learning environment.

As a mentor, Mr. Euba guides undergraduates through their process of learning German and in their selection of study abroad courses. He mentors graduate students carefully in their process of becoming teachers—training future academic instructors to be inquisitive and reflective thinkers.

Niko Euba’s efforts outside the classroom are no less impressive. Whether it be a colleague who details the visible gusto with which students perform at Mr. Euba’s annual stagings of German Cabaret, or the undergraduate student who warmly thanks him for joining students for meals after school and supporting the student-led German club, praise in support of Niko Euba is unanimous.

I would extend the description "elegant and attractive" from Stationen to Niko himself. Congratulations!
