AATG announces 2020 election results

AATG is pleased to announce the results of the 2020 election. Congratulations to these members elected to serve on the Board of Directors, the governing body of the AATG, starting January 1, 2021. 

T. BarskeTobias Barske, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, will serve as Midwest Region Representative 2021-2023.

Tobias Barske is a native speaker of German. After spending his childhood in Riedenburg, Lower Bavaria, he lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for 5 years where he attended Jakarta International School. Before moving to the United States, Tobias studied Geography and English at the Universität Regensburg in Germany. In 2001, he completed his Master's degree in Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and was granted his Ph.D. in German Applied Linguistics from the same institution in 2006 with an additional Certificate of Advanced Study in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education.  

In 2006, Tobias joined the Department of World Languages & Literatures at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point as Assistant Professor of German and Applied Linguistics. Currently, he holds the rank of Full Professor. He teaches German language, language teaching methodology, culture, and linguistics courses and also coordinates the foreign language teacher education program. His passion for teaching second languages and serving as a cultural bridge between the US and Germany includes raising an inquisitive bilingual daughter.

K. Bauerlein Katrina Bauerlein, Mahopac Central School District, Yorktown Heights, New York, will serve as Northeast Region Representative 2021-2023.

Since returning from a Fulbright teaching assistantship in 2001, Katrina Bauerlein (MST Pace University, BA Tufts University) has been the German teacher for Mahopac Central Schools in NYS. Mahopac’s German sequence now consists of six levels (grades 7-12), including a German 201 course (concurrent enrollment with SUNY Dutchess Community College) and AP German. MHS hosts exchange students biannually, currently partnering with Gymnasium Walldorf near Heidelberg. Katrina advises an active German Club, which recognizes student excellence via Delta Epsilon Phi, the National German Exam, the AATG/PAD Study Trip, CBYX, and Study Bridge through the Goethe Institut.  

Katrina leads private educational tours to Germany and Austria for her own students and for other US-based German teachers through Edu-Ventures Travel. In addition to the AATG, she is a member of NYSAFLT and ACTFL and enjoys longstanding partnerships with local German social clubs, the Goethe Institut, and the office of the German Consul General in NY. Since 2008, Katrina has served as a College Board AP reader and leader, most recently as a Question Leader. She is a member of the AATG’s NGE Development Committee and served on NYS’s World Language Standards Review Committee representing the Hudson Valley.
