In cooperation with the National Association of Teachers of German (AATG), the Indiana chapter offers a variety of services to chapter members and their students in the state of Indiana. Included among these are the following:

In Indiana approximately 600 high school students participate each year in the Testing and Awards Program. Indiana is consistently one of the largest participating chapters in this competition nationally. High school German students who achieve above the 90th percentile on the standardized written portion of the test are invited to an oral test for final evaluation.

Winners receive study-trips to Germany sponsored by the the national AATG office. In addition, the Indiana chapter recognizes its winners at the annual fall chapter meetings and awards prizes of its own. For many years, Indiana has been awarded at least one study-trip to Germany nearly each summer.

High school German teachers should receive information on the testing program each year from the national office of AATG. AdditionAL information is published each year in the IATG Mitteilungen, the newsletter of our state chapter. For specific information on the testing and awards program, please contact an Indiana chapter officer.

Indiana Association of Students of German

Each spring the Indiana chapter of AATG sponsors a Staatskongress for high school students who are members of the Indiana Association of Students of German (IASG). The Staatskongress normally takes place on the campus of an Indiana college or university.

Over 500 students from all parts of the state gather to compete and exhibit their talents in German language/culture related projects and competitions. Projects range from listening comprehension through poetry recitation, photography, skits, posters, Jahrmarkt, baking and quiz bowl. Numerous awards and "Sprechgeld" are given for excellent achievement in the competitions and for speaking German with roving "Bergwanderer."

The daylong celebration is capped off with a gala evening awards banquet followed by dancing to the music of a German-style band.

The Indiana chapter sponsors two professional meetings each year. The October meeting is held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association (IFLTA), thus providing a greatly expanded conference with a wide variety of presentations and opportunities to "compare notes" with teachers in other languages throughout the state. The size of the fall meeting also allows for a large exhibition hall featuring textbook, multi-media, computer software, and various other displays by language service organizations.

The spring meeting involves only IATG members and, in recent years, has been a Spring Immersion program of a special nature. Many times it has dealt with Indiana's German cultural heritage and has included group excursions to historical sites or related points of interest to German teachers.

The chapter newsletter, the IATG MITTEILUNGEN is published two times annually, once in the fall and once in the spring. Each issue contains the names and addresses of chapter officers, directors of various service programs and events, a calendar of events, special notices of interest to teachers and students, information on professional meetings, information on services available to members, and a variety of articles pertaining to German language, culture, and pedagogy.
