AATG’s German Summer-Study Program provides an excellent opportunity for teachers of German to send their students to Germany, and also for those teachers who would like an all-expense-paid trip to Germany as a chaperone of an AATG group.

The beauty of the program is the flexibility it offers teachers. There are several ways you can participate in this program: 

• Accompany your own group of students as their chaperone;
• Accompany an AATG group as a chaperone, even if you have only a few of your own students (we’ll add the rest to form a group of approximately fifteen);
• Send only one or two of your students; we’ll add them to a group;
• Send an entire group of students without having to accompany them; we’ll provide the chaperone.

AATG handles all the details ranging from flight arrangements on Lufthansa Airlines, to matching you with a Kursleiter/in who makes all arrangements at the local Gymnasium in one of the many beautiful German course sites. The Kursleiter/in is responsible for the administration and composition of the study program in school and is in charge of the class schedule and planning all excursions. The American chaperone acts as a liaison for the students and teaches the American participants for one or two class periods per day. The chaperone usually lives with a German host family who provides room and board.

How will your students benefit?

A Learning Experience: Living and studying in Germany is the basis of the German Summer-Study Program sponsored by the AATG, in cooperation with the German governmental agency, the Pedagogical Exchange Service (Pädagogischer Austauschdienst, or PAD). This program represents a significant step towards achieving the highest goal of intercultural language education: improved global awareness and understanding.  

Live in German Homes: The host family usually has children close in age to the American participants, and every effort is made to match "brothers" and "sisters" with similar interests.  

Attend Gymnasium Classes: This is an excellent opportunity to improve German language skills. The school year in Germany runs into July in several states, and the Gymnasium is still in session when the American students arrive. Special class arrangements are made to insure student participation.  

Trips to Points of Interest: Field trips are organized for students to local points of interest.  In addition to these group outings, the host families generally plan excursions to show their visiting "son" or "daughter" the local area.
