We understand that your daughter/son has expressed an interest in participating in the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) German Summer-Study Program. Thousands of American students have studied in Germany with this program during the last thirty years.
Our summer study program offers insight into the German culture and living and gives students a tool for future studies in the language. We feel that knowing German will be a help in their future studies. Many colleges require a foreign language, and German has applications in many fields, including science, math, and the arts.
Because the Federal Republic of Germany is a major trading partner of the United States and one of the world's largest exporters, the ability to conduct business and social matters in German can be an important asset to American business people. The U.S. imports more from Germany than from any other European country. Over one thousand American companies conduct business in German-speaking countries, and more than a thousand companies based in German-speaking countries have subsidiaries in the U.S.
The AATG, founded in 1926, is the only national organization representing German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of the language, literature, culture, and civilization of the German-speaking countries. Its membership is near 5,000, of which 55 percent are elementary and secondary teachers, and 45 percent represent college and universities. AATG has 59 chapters in the United States and one in Europe. The Association publishes two journals as well as a quarterly newsletter for its members. Among its many other programs are: an Annual Meeting; professional development programs; a materials center; seminars for teachers; a national German examination and awards program; and a secondary school national German honor society.
