Changes for AP German

The AP Program is delighted to share with you information about changes underway in several AP courses and exams in history, science and world languages. These changes will help AP students develop deep conceptual understanding of their subject area and hone the 21st century skills they need to be successful in college.

As a matter or practice, the AP Program is committed to telling schools about changes in AP courses at least two years before those changes will be implemented. On Monday, November 22, we will launch our new microsite, Advances in AP, http://advancesinap.collegeboard.org, which details changes to courses in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years:

Courses Changing in 2011-12 (These were first announced last year; additional information is now available):

  • AP French Language and Culture
  • AP German Language and Culture
  • AP World History

Courses Changing in 2012-13:

  • AP Spanish Literature and Culture
  • AP Latin

Other subjects:

  • AP Italian Language and Culture:  We are thrilled to announce that AP Italian will be reinstated in 2011-12.
  • AP Biology Update: The final college faculty reviews of the draft curriculum framework are complete. While breadth had been reduced in the earlier review stages, these final reviews identified approximately three weeks of additional content to remove. This reduction will give teachers more time to develop students’ deep conceptual understanding of Biology and to engage in inquiry-based lab experiences. College faculty reviewers from the nation’s top colleges and universities have wholeheartedly endorsed this breadth reduction. A final AP Biology Curriculum Framework will be available to the public in February 2011. The earliest the revised course will be implemented is 2012-13.
  • U.S. History Update: The curriculum is currently being reviewed by faculty; we will post more information about the course in February 2011. The earliest the revised course will be implemented is 2012-13.

For the most up-to-date and complete information about changes in AP courses and exams visit Advances in AP, http://advancesinap.collegeboard.org. There you will find:

  • Curriculum frameworks, which describe the college-level knowledge and skills students need to succeed on the AP Exam.
  • Course audit information: Teachers in impacted subjects will need to participate in the course audit, see FAQ for specifics on timing.
  • Exam information and sample questions (World History available. French and German questions available in February 2011)
  • Timelines, recommended action plans, information on professional development and other resources that will help schools plan for these changes.

I hope you’ll find the information available on the website helpful.
