Katharina Häusler-Gross of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan received the Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. This award recognizes achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the US.

Katharina Häusler-Gross is Associate Professor of German at Aquinas College, where she currently serves as the section head and coordinator for the German programs and lead facilitator of the 2013-2016 Strategic Plan. She completed her Lehrerausbildung in Germany and earned a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2004. She plays an active role as a member of both AATG and the Goethe-Institut Trainernetzwerk. In her early years in the US, she started out as an instructor at the Goethe-Institut Chicago.

A colleague writes, "She’s a poster-child for the important efforts of excellence in teaching, connections to other disciplines, high level of promotion and visibility, and a keen understanding of institutional and disciplinary networks.”

Katharina Häusler-Gross focuses on her students’ needs, in teaching as well as beyond the classroom. She instructs students on how to prepare for and capitalize on study abroad programs, and also gets them ready for the job market. She is such an effective teacher that some of "her colleagues take her classes to learn more about her teaching methods.”
