Katharina Barbe Receives Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit

Katharina Barbe of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois
Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando.This award recognizes
achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the US.
Katharina Barbeis chair of the Department
of Foreign Languages and Literature at Northern Illinois University. After
completing studies in Berlin and Houston, she received her Ph.D. from Rice
University in 1989, started her academic career at Northern Illinois University
in 1990, and was appointed Associate Professor in 1996. She is a very active
member of AATG both on the local and national level, and also the Goethe-Institut
Trainernetzwerk. She has recently co-authored a book on preparing
students for the new AP German exam, Deutsch als Fremdsprache –
Prüfungstraining - AP® German Language and Culture.
She received Northern Illinois University’s Excellence in Undergraduate
Teaching Award in recognition of her abilities — an award for which the
recipients are selected by the students. A colleague comments, "Katharina is a
leader at her university, in professional associations, in both German language
teaching and linguistics, and as a publisher and reviewer of professional
Katharina Barbe excels in all areas related to the teaching profession.
To mention just a few, she is an outstanding team player and manages to get
people with different interests and backgrounds to work together. Her calm and
friendly demeanor contributes to making her an excellent member of any team.
She supports German programs by creating liaisons between school and university
programs, frequently collaborating with colleagues at the K-12 level, and
offering mini-sessions in a local elementary school.
