Cathy Altmeyer of Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania, received the Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit at the AATG’s recent meeting in Orlando. This award recognizes achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the US.
Cathy Altmeyer has been working as Instructor of German at Washington & Jefferson College since 2001. She started out as a high school German teacher, which contributes to her unique ability to involve her students and make them a part of the German program, both in class and beyond. Cathy organizes Three Rivers German Day, which brings middle and high school students to the campus and keeps German visible in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She’s also served many years as an AATG chapter officer.
Colleagues speak highly of her efforts, both at her institution and within the AATG chapter, saying "I cannot think of a German instructor at any level who works as tirelessly and as professionally. Ask any German student where to go for assistance, and they all invariably name Cathy Altmeyer as the go-to instructor.”
Cathy Altmeyer’s interest in her students’ success is paramount. She visits students in school internship placements and offers valuable feedback on language teaching methods. She is the first to assist and train the candidates in ACTFL testing for certification, and her students consistently pass all necessary testing sections for certification – typically the first time around.
