Gabriele Verhoeven received AATG’s highest honor, the 2013 Outstanding German Educator Award, at the AATG”s recent meeting in Orlando. This award is presented in recognition of excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the German teaching profession.

Gabriele Verhoeven teaches elementary students at Wiley International Magnet School in Raleigh, but has extensive experience in teaching Kindergarten, Advanced Placement and everything in between. Her former students span the globe, from an international school in Paris, to schools in Germany, to several schools in North Carolina. No matter where her passion for teaching led her, she has left in her wake a host of students and families passionate about German.

Ms. Verhoeven has a deep appreciation for language learning and she builds her teaching upon her own language journey. Her teaching style rests on a solid foundation of inquiry-based instructional models of language acquisition. She tailors her teaching to suit individual learning preferences and to make learning German relevant, engaging and meaningful to all students, regardless of age or background.

Ms. Verhoeven utilizes a myriad activities and strategies to make her classroom a place where learning German comes to life: welcoming students with Schultüten, acting out fairy tales and singing in German, teaching through games and play, celebrating visits from St. Nikolaus, using authentic realia and drawing upon her first-hand knowledge of Germany’s language and culture.

She has taken students to Germany and other destinations in Europe and her students have competed in German Day and other language competitions in North Carolina. Her participation in German Day as a coach and a judge has been instrumental in the success of the statewide German competition. She has created and shaped curricula and has a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching language that is informed by Common Core and European standards.

Gabriele Verhoeven is highly regarded for her ability to make the language-learning experience rewarding. She is supportive and caring and seeks to guide eager young minds to become lifelong learners. She is valued by colleagues and administrators for her leadership in professional development offerings and language outreach efforts. A positive, steadfast and humble coworker, she is always ready to pitch in. Her enthusiasm for teaching and learning is infectious. Throughout her time as an educator, Ms. Verhoeven has maintained a focus on students having fun while learning German.
