Kulturelle und sprachliche Vielfalt
(In German; auf deutsch)
The German-speaking world is culturally diverse and the German language is equally diverse with different Standard German for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland as well as regional dialects and varieties specific to social groups. Language courses have to reflect this diversity in order to provide an authentic image of the German-speaking world and prepare students for interaction in the real world. Additionally, cultural and linguistic diversity provide great resources for enriching the classroom and foster higher thinking skills. The workshop will show how cultural and linguistic diversity can be integrated into the curriculum on all levels of instruction.
The first part of the workshop will present resources for culture lessons on German-speaking countries (D-A-CH-Lie-Lux), regional cultures, and social groups. The second part will give a very short overview of the linguistic diversity of German and examples of lessons that utilize linguistic diversity to teach Standard German skills. Finally, participants plan a lesson for their curriculum (on language, culture, or both), facilitated by the presenter.
