INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SEMINAR FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS “THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION IN EAST-CENTRAL EUROPE” June 29 – July 25, 2009 Greeley, CO – The year 2009 commemorates the twenty year anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in East-Central Europe. The University of Northern Colorado, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is offering a four-week seminar to K-12 teachers to explore the political philosophies developed by dissidents in the former communist countries of East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. Participants will spend three weeks in Berlin and one week in historic Leipzig. “Being able to visit Berlin 20 years after the Peaceful Revolution to study the path which led to the fall and analyze the ongoing impact of this monumental event is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We are very excited about this seminar” says Dr. Christiane Olivo, Seminar Director. The intensive seminar is limited to 15 participants and will include in-class discussions, assigned readings, lectures from prominent former dissidents, guided city tours and numerous museum visits. There is no language requirement for the seminar, which will be conducted in English. Teachers from all disciplines are welcome to apply and participants will receive a stipend to cover the majority of their travel and living expenses. Participants may choose to receive credit for this seminar. Applications must be post-marked by March 2, 2009.
