AATG Listserv
How to Subscribe

Join the interesting and useful dialogue with your colleagues on the AATG Listserv. You can subscribe in one of two ways. You can send an email message to listserv@listserv.iupui.edu, with the message SUBscribe AATG First Lastname (replace with your name and do not use quotes), as the only entry in the body of the mail. Note, those of you with e-mail "signatures" or "tags," please REMOVE them before sending the subscription request. Suggestion: When subscribing, please adjust your e-mail settings to plain text (rather than HTML or another format). Another tip: Since most ISPs are now using spam blockers, most LISTSERV mail is misidentified as spam. People having problems receiving (or, for that matter, even subscribing) have to TURN OFF the spam filter OR notify their ISP to do that for them.

The other way to subscribe is to use your web browser. Simply go to the following address, or paste it into your browser: http://listserv.iupui.edu/archives/aatg.html
When you reach the site, click on the option to JOIN the List and follow the online instructions. Once you're subscribed, you'll be able to send (post) messages to the AATG List, SEARCH the archives, among other options, using the web interface.

Do you have questions on what is "proper" in use of our listserv? Do you wonder how some of our "power users" do their thing on the AATG List? If so, then take a look at the outstanding Netiquette Guide assembled by our AATG Treasurer and Listowner, Harry Reichelt.

Reminders for users

Don't include the entire original message when you send a reply. (See the paragraphs below on "REPLIES".) Subscribers who do not abide by the noted requirements are put "on review" (i.e., their mail is forwarded to me before it can be submitted to the list for posting), or they are deleted from the list if they continue to resend entire original messages with their replies.

Don't let your mailbox reach the "full" status. After several attempts to send mail to your full mailbox, LISTSERV(R) will delete you from the list.

Don't submit commercial solicitations. This list is for collegial discourse, not for promoting business.

Don't forward messages from other sources, be they from individuals or other lists, unless you have *explicit* permission from the authors or listowners *AND* the message is relevant to the AATG list.

Don't send messages about virus alerts, software bugs, etc. The AATG list is for matters about German language, literature, culture, pedagogy and related fields. (There are many lists devoted exclusively to computer issues.)

Don't send commands (such as UNSUBscribe, NOMAIL, etc.) to the list. They must be directed to the LISTSERV(R) address (see below).

Don't expect LISTSERV(R) to permit you to post to the list if your address changes -- even by one letter. If your current address does not match exactly your subscription address, LISTSERV(R) will not recognize you as a legitimate subscriber. (Resubscribe with your new address.)

After all the "don'ts", here's a "do" reminder:

Remember that you can always contact me for help at itae100@iupui.edu.

Summary of Commands

The commands below must be sent to listserv@listserv.iupui.edu, *never* to the mailing list. (Mail that you want all subscribers of the list to receive is addressed to AATG@listserv.iupui.edu.)

Action you want: What you type: (Only the capitalized part is needed)

  • To Subscribe SUBscribe AATG John Doe (replace with your name)
  • To Unsubscribe UNSUBscribe AATG
  • To Suspend Mail SET AATG NOMAIL
  • To Receive Mail (as individual msgs) SET AATG MAIL
  • To Receive Mail (as daily digests) SET AATG DIGEST
  • To Get Archives GET AATG LOGYYMM (e.g., the command GET AATG LOG9605 will send you the archives for May 96. Archives are stored on a monthly basis, starting with April, 1993)

Tip: When you send a message to Listserv(R), you can have multiple commands as long as you make sure that you put only one command on its *own* line of the message and do NOT include a SUBJECT entry, your SIGNATURE or TAG.

A final note: If/when you go on vacation, please use SET AATG NOMAIL and then either SET AATG MAIL or SET AATG DIGEST when you return to avoid overflowing your mailbox. A repeatedly "full" mailbox will result in your automatic deletion from the list by LISTSERV(R).

Harry Reichelt, AATG Listowner
