Why Should I Join AATG?
What's in it for me besides publications I may never read?  Couldn't my money be spent more profitably elsewhere?

The benefits of joining AATG far outweigh the cost in terms of professional growth and development.  There probably isn't a less expensive way to expand your knowledge and skills.  For the cost of membership, you have access to a Web site with a wealth of information, ways in which to recognize outstanding performance on the part of your students, and several publications yearly.  In addition, you have the option of attending state (chapter) and national meetings. Perhaps most importantly because AATG is an organization for teachers of German from pre-K to graduate school, you will be able to exchange ideas, information, and concerns with colleagues at all levels of instruction.

AATG’s Web site will provide you with unlimited resources for your personal intellectual growth as well as wonderful ideas for lesson plans and teaching ideas.  The collection of links to relevant Web sites is a good place to start when, for example, you are preparing a Web quest for your students.  On our site you’ll also find an opportunity for on-line workshops for teachers who are seeking continuing education credits in the GOLDEN program.  Announcements about conferences, calls for papers and other events are available.

In addition, AATG has many programs and activities, some of which include:
  • Summer Seminars for Teachers
  • Opportunities to attend and present at the Annual Meeting
  • Professional Development Consultants program
  • National Testing and Awards for Students
  • German Summer Study Program for Students
  • Delta Epsilon Phi (National German Honor Society)
  • Chapter Project Grants
  • AATG and Teaching Positions Listserv

Teachers seem always to be searching for ways to recognize outstanding students. AATG offers medals and certificates of merit and achievement.  In addition, you may choose to establish a German honor society (Delta Epsilon Phi) in your middle or high school, or help your students participate in nation-wide testing with the National German Exam. Through the generosity of the German government, groups of students are chosen each year to attend a special program in Germany because of their high performance on the National Exam. AATG also sponsors a summer study abroad trip for high school students, some of whom receive scholarships from the AATG Endowment for Student Study Abroad. Each year over 100 students travel to Germany to study German and live with host families. All of this is available to you and your students, if you are a member of AATG.

Certainly, conference and chapter meeting attendance is an additional cost, but they occasionally are close enough that you can manage to go to one of them a year.  The personal and professional growth you will experience when you attend such meetings is beyond words.  The networking, the infusion of new ideas, the opportunity to talk directly with colleagues, the thrill of being part of something big are just some of the ingredients that go into the mix that makes a conference such a thrill.

Could your money be spent more profitably elsewhere?  Maybe, especially if you do not actively engage yourself in what is available to members.  However, if you decide to carefully read the journal and take an occasional walk through the Web site and the online store, then the answer is an emphatic "Not at all!" With the inspiration you receive from your membership in a professional organization, you, your students, and your institution will reap the benefits of your participation.
