LangSource

LangSource is an online database of instructional resources for the teaching of culture to students in grades K-12.

The project is housed at the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland and supported by a grant from the International Research and Studies in the US Department of Education. The three year project identifies materials for teachers of Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Spanish as well as materials for the professional development of teachers of these languages related to teaching culture and aligned with Goal 2 of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.

The intent of LangSource is to gather the best language learning and teaching resources available in one easily accessible and searchable database.  AATG is one of the professional language associations involved in the project. KLD participates.

The American Council on Immersion Education (ACIE)

The spring 2001 issue of the ACIE Newsletter includes the following articles: "Channeling Involved Parents," "East Meets West: Dual Track Immersion," and "Immersion Teacher Education, and Teacher Education through Immersion: Possibilities, Problems, and Prospects." There is also information about teacher recruitment and a new certificate program in Language Immersion Education at the University of Minnesota. The Bridge: From Research to Practice is entitled "Content-Based Language Instruction: The Foundation of Language Immersion Education."

German Language School Conference (GLSC)

The majority of the private German language schools in operation today in the United States were established after 1945. At that time, as well as now, parents in German-speaking communities realized the paucity of German language and culture programs in many parts of the country. They also recognized the lack of continuous, long-term instructional programs of the German language as well as the absence of classes informing and teaching about the products and practices of the German culture. These concerns along with an urgent need for high proficiency courses for advanced, native and near-native speakers inspired these committed parents to establish private German language schools to serve their specific needs.

To link these schools within a central organization for information and support, the German Consulate General in New York and the German language schools in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania founded the German Language School Conference (GLSC) in 1977. GLSC was incorporated on April 22, 1978. GLSC has grown from five founding school members to over 30 German language schools and school clusters today.

GLSC Goals:

  • To assist parents and other individuals as well as groups interested in establishing private German language schools
  • To assist its member-schools in teaching the German language and culture on all proficiency levels.
  • To assist its member schools in promoting a positive image and furthering good-will and respect for the heritage of German-speaking peoples
  • To assist its schools in selecting and producing teaching material as well as official testing instruments for articulation into further programs in the US and Germany
  • To offer a forum for a variety of topics concerning the German language, literature and culture and to provide venues for the exchange of ideas and opinions
  • To enhance the professional development of its members on the basis of close cooperation, academic collegiality and fellowship

National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL)

NNELL is an organization for educators involved in teaching foreign languages to children. The mission of the organization is to promote opportunities for all children to develop a high level of competence in at least one language in addition to their own. NNELL provides leadership, support, and service to those committed to early language learning and coordinates efforts to make language learning in programs of excellence a reality for all children. NNELL publishes a journal, Learning Languages.
