Below is a list of Multiplikatoren available to give workshops on issues related to multiculturalism and diversity.

Maintaining the Momentum (Andress, MO) Discusses the AATG's Maintaining the Momentum project on issues of high school to college articulation, results of the survey conducted during Spring 2000, and efforts to develop strategies and promotional materials addressed to teachers and students that can aid in persuading students to stay with German in college.

Teaching Contemporary Issues Using Kinder- und Jugendliteratur in the German Classroom (Moffit, MI) Introduces authentic German children's and young adult literature which deal with contemporary issues such as personal identity, traditional vs. modern family, gender relationships, Vergangenheitsbewältigung, Ausländerfeindlichkeit, environmental concerns, and post-Wende problems. Demonstrates creative pedagogical techniques, student assignments, projects, and various ways of assessment.

Germany and the US - After 9/11 (Nickisch ID) Overview of the troubled relationships between our two countries in light of the events of 9/11 and the differing perceptions of threats from terrorism. Is this a passing phenomenon, or should we be aware of a basic shift in the alliance. bringing a new reality to German-American relations?

German Rap Music in the Foreign Language Classroom (Schmidt, SC) Explores the current state of German rap music and how it can be applied in the German classroom. By analyzing the differences and similarities in American and German pop culture, students will be able to realize the complexity of different interacting cultures.

The Tragic Mulatto Turned Upside-Down: Fred Karl Scheibe's Des Mulatten Fluch (Delap, AL) An exploration, through German-American drama, of shared racial ideologies of the last century. This presentation, in English, seeks to demonstrate the dynamics of the myth of the tragic mulatto and impart better understanding of the disintegration of this myth and of the drama's meaning, even in its author's eyes.

"Kulturell gesehen, natürlich!" (Hollender, OH) Teach students to go beyond stereotypes and see what makes cultures differ. Values aren't 'natural,' they're really cultural. Entertaining magazine ads, proverbs and literary texts are shown as evidence of German value orientations, but participants also identify and question their own assumptions. By learning the basics of Intercultural Communication, teachers and students find new insights for literary and cultural interpretation and learn more reasons to appreciate diversity.

Diversity in the German Language Classroom (Murti, VT) Diversity goes beyond categories of race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. It also includes learner and teacher styles within the classroom. This presentation will work with realia (video, transparencies,audio) on how to use diversity as a pedagogical tool in the German language classroom. Presenting a More Diverse Germany to a More Diverse Audience of German Learners (Hampton, IN) Two-part presentation: 1) Acquaints participants with the cultural diversity of Germany, using the example of Afro-or African Germans from the late nineteenth century to the present. Participants develop classroom materials and teaching units for selected texts by Afro-German writers. 2) Using the example of endeavors at Earlham College, participants address the issues of attracting more American ethnic minorities to the study of German.

Sign Language in/and German? (Mitchell, DC) Focuses on the reality of differences and similarities among today's learners. Learn how to integrate students of color, heritage learners, those with learning disabilities, and the deaf/hard-of-hearing into the German classroom.

Teaching Diverse Students (Ratwik, MN) Presents strategies for teaching diverse students which are helpful when planning daily lessons and curriculum, including oral activities which lead to success with the national K-16 student standards. Discusses ideas for retaining students and classroom management. Handouts included.
